Italian Literature and Anatomy (XIXth-XXIth Centuries)

The speech aims to highlight the relationship between literature, imagery and medicine. In Italy, during the second half of the 19th Century, many writers and poets often depicted anatomical museums, preparations, anatomy lessons and many anatomists became the characters of verses, novels and short stories. From 1880 onwards, through the rise of Verism, anatomy and other medical sciences were no longer subjects to be portrayed, but they represent a metre of literary construction. The writer, in order to represent reality, tends to identify with the scientist, thus avoiding any aesthetic filter in the narrative description. In the 21st Century, some writers have set some novels back in the 19th Century and have returned to portraying the medical environment of the time in a contemporary way.
